Question 1

How accurate is the Navy body fat calculator?

Accepted Answer

Measured carefully, the Navy method lands within plus or minus 3-4 percentage points of a DEXA scan for most adults. The error grows for very lean or very muscular bodies, whose fat distribution breaks the formula's assumptions.

Question 2

Why does this calculator give a different result than my smart scale?

Accepted Answer

Smart scales use bioelectrical impedance, which swings with hydration, food, caffeine and time of day. Tape methods are steadier because they measure fixed body dimensions. Compare readings only within the same method, taken under the same conditions.

Question 3

What is the Covert Bailey method?

Accepted Answer

It is a tape measure method from Covert Bailey's book The Ultimate Fit or Fat, using waist, hip, forearm, wrist, thigh and calf measurements. It applies different formulas by sex and by age band (30 and under, over 30), with accuracy around plus or minus 4-5 points.

Question 4

What is CUN-BAE and who should use it?

Accepted Answer

CUN-BAE estimates body fat from BMI, age and sex, with no measurements at all, using an equation from the Clinica Universidad de Navarra. It suits anyone without a tape measure or calipers. It was validated in adults, including older adults, but it is not designed for children.

Question 5

Where do I measure my waist for the Navy method?

Accepted Answer

Men measure at navel level, women at the narrowest point of the natural waist. Keep the tape horizontal on bare skin, measure at the end of a normal breath out, and never pull your stomach in.

Question 6

What is a healthy body fat percentage for my age?

Accepted Answer

For adults aged 20-39, the healthy range is roughly 8-19% for men and 21-32% for women, rising slightly with age. In ACE category terms, women are healthy from the essential range (10-13%) through acceptable (25-31%), and men from essential (2-5%) through acceptable (18-24%).

Question 7

At what body fat percentage do abs become visible?

Accepted Answer

For most men, abs start to show around 10-14% body fat. For most women, the equivalent is roughly 16-19%, although genetics and where you store fat shift these numbers.

Question 8

How often should I check my body fat percentage?

Accepted Answer

Every 2-4 weeks is enough. Daily or weekly readings mostly show water shifts and normal measurement noise, not real fat change.

Question 9

Can I calculate body fat without a tape measure or calipers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The CUN-BAE and BMI estimate methods in this body fat calculator need only your height, weight, age and sex. Treat both as rough guides, because they are the least precise methods on this page.

Question 10

Why did my body fat percentage rise while I was losing weight?

Accepted Answer

If calories or protein run too low, part of the weight you lose is lean mass rather than fat. Losing muscle faster than fat pushes the percentage up even as the scale goes down, which is why this calculator reports fat mass and lean mass separately.
